What happens at a first consultation

• A detailed history of your symptoms, their pattern and how they affect daily life.
• A focused clinical examination.
• Review of any ultrasound, mammogram, CT, MRI or blood results you already have.
• Additional tests requested only when they will change the plan.
• A clear explanation of the options, including the option of not operating.

When surgery is not the answer

Many conditions seen in the clinic are managed without an operation. Small thyroid nodules are often monitored, most gallstones that never cause symptoms are left alone, and the majority of hemorrhoids and anal fissures settle with medical and dietary measures. Surgery is recommended when it clearly offers more benefit than continued conservative care.

Symptoms that should be assessed promptly

• A new or growing lump in the neck or breast.
• Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially with fever or jaundice.
• A hernia that becomes painful, firm and cannot be pushed back.
• Rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit or unexplained weight loss.
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing associated with a neck swelling.
